The last two weeks I have been very absent on the blogosphere and the internet in general. I think it is good to take a little break sometimes, especially when you realize that you are spending too much time in front of the computer when there is actually so many things that can be done outside (especially if the weather is good!).

Las últimas dos semanas he andado un poco desaparecido de la blogósfera e internet en general. A veces es bueno tomarse una pausa, especialmente cuando te das cuentas de que estás pasando demasiado tiempo en frente de la computadora cuando hay, en realidad, muchas otras cosas que hacer afuera (¡especialmente si las condiciones climáticas son buenas!

I have been working on a few projects lately (of which I will talk about later) and  I managed to finish one of them... and it is FINALLY flying overseas to meet its owner!!

He estado trabajando en algunos proyectos (de los cuales hablaré dentro de poco) e incluso logré POR FIN terminar uno de ellos... el cual se encuentra en este momento POR FIN (nuevamente) volando allende de los mares para encontrarse con su dueña :)

It was precisely this newly finished project the one that reminded me of The Baltic Blossoms Shawl and the Terrible Accident (well, not so terrible after all, hehe). I had decided that I was going to put this shawl to sleep  in the dark depth of the closet (how dramatic is this?! haha) but there were many of you that showed a lot of interest in it, even though it had this hole where the yarn was teared while I was blocking it.

Fue precisamente este proyecto recién terminado el que me hizo acordarme del Chal Baltic Blossoms y del Terrible Accidente  (que bueno... no es TAN terrible en realidad, jeje). Había decidido poner este chal a dormir  en la profunda oscuridad del armario (¡¡cuánto drama!! jaja) pero much@s de ustedes mostraron gran interés en él, aunque tuviera el agujero donde el hilo se cortó mientras lo bloqueaba.

So, here it is... I will give it away!

The hole is really not that big and as someone said on a comment it could be a perfect shawl for daily use, mostly as a scarf because it is not very big.
El agujero no es TAN grande en realidad... y como alguien muy bien dijo este chal podría ser usado como chal para uso diario, más que nada como una bufanda, pues no es muy grande.

I think that just one present is way too little... I will think about a second prize... so there will be two winners... I will let you know what the second prize will be as soon as I figure it out :)

Playing with Bobbin Lace and a Terrible Accident! / Jugando con encaje de bolillos y ¡un terrible accidente!

Since I started to teach bobbin lace to Sayo I decided that I needed to start practicing myself. It had been almost nine months since the last time I made some bobbin lace exercise so it was time to refresh my memory :)

Desde que le empecé a enseñar a hacer encaje de bolillos a Sayo, decidí que yo mismo necesitaba practicar un poquito (para ser un buen profe, ¿no?). La última vez que había tomado los bolillos fue hace aproximadamente nueve meses, así ya era tiempo para refrescar un poco la memoria :)

It has been quite a journey! Lots of mistakes and lots new things to learn!

¡Retomar los bolillos ha sido un pedazo de viaje! Muchos errores pero a la vez muchas cosas que aprender.

So, I decided to start with something rather simple. Looking through some of the books I have I found a pattern for a book marker that would help review some basic stitches.

Entonces, decidí empezar con algo más bien simple. Ojeando algunos de los libros que tengo, encontré un patrón para un marcapáginas que me permitiría repasar algunos de los puntos más básicos.

It started pretty smooth. I was surprised to see that everything was coming back so easily!
Todo empezó bastante bien. ¡Me sorprendió bastante lo rápido que todo volvía a mi cabeza!

When I was starting to take the pins to use them as the piece was growing I found a HORRIBLE mistake!! (I guess I don't even have to point it!)
Cuando empecé a retirar alfileres (porque se me habían aabado) me di cuenta de un error ¡HORRENDO! (Que supongo ni siquiera necesito decir dónde está).

After realizing that I had made a huge mistake and that it was all the way up... I didn't feel like undoing AT ALL (it takes too long!). So I decided to cut the thread and leave it there (the book marker was not THAT cute anyways, hehe).


Al darme cuenta del error que había hecho y ver cuán arriba estaba en la labor, decidí cortar los hilos y ponerle punto final. Deshacer toma demasiado tiempo y además el marcapágina ni siquiera estaba quedando tan bonito, jeje.

Now, I didn't give up and decided that I had to make another one. So, talking to Mayte (who has a wonderful blog and makes beautiful things!) looking for some advice among other things she tought me she also sent me some cool patterns.


Ahora, no me di por vencido y decidí hacer otro. Contacté a Mayte (que tiene un blog precioso y hacer unas cosas maravillosas) para que me diera algunos consejos y al final terminó hasta enviándome unos patrones de marcapáginas muy lindos.

So, I started all over again! 


¡Así que empecé nuevamente!

My first attempt was to make it with linen (nº35/2). The result was this:


En mi primer intento usé hilo de lino (nº35/2). Este fue el resultado:

Overall, I was happy with how it turned out, except for the fact that I think that the thread I used was too thick for the pattern, so the fans (those two rounded things on the middle) look too chunky and not clear. I think I should have had to use the pattern at 110% of the original (that means 5.5 mm between dots) in order to have had this right.

En términos generales, sí, quedé contento con cómo resultó, excepto por el hecho que el hilo que usé era demasiado grueso para el picado. Como pueden ver, en las conchas el hilo está todo amontonado y deforme. Creo que debí haber usado el patrón al 110% de su tamaño original (o sea, 5.5mm entre puntos) para que hubiera resultado bien. 

This was something REALLY cool I learned making this book marker: A flat knot. Doesn't it look awesome?
Esto fue algo muy chulo que aprendí al hacer este marcapáginas: Un nudo plano. No les parece chulo?

Since I was just happy with the result, and not ECSTATIC, I decided to give it another try (I don't give up easily!!) but this time with cotton nº30 (a much finer and softer thread).

Como sólo terminé contento con el resultado y no EXTASIADO, decidí intentar una vez más (¡no me rindo fácilmente!) pero esta vez usando hilo de algodón nº30 (mucho más suave y fino que el lino)

So, I cut the threads... one more time and started AGAIN!!


Una vez más corté los hilos y empecé de nuevo.

This time, everything worked smooth as silk and it took me almost no time to finish it!! (just a few hours!)


Como dicen, la tercera es la vencida, y sí... ¡lo fue! Esta vez fue mucho más fácil y rápido (me tomó sólo unas pocas horas terminarlo).

A little closer: In this one it is possible to see the stitches very well. It much "cleaner" than the one made with linen.
Un poquín más cerca: En este marcapáginas es posible visualizar los puntos mucho mejor. Es mucho más "limpio" que el hecho con lino.

• I learned with this little projects one thing about myself: I don't give up easily!! And I am happy about that!

• Con estos projectos aprendí una cosa sobre mí: ¡¡No me rindo fácilmente!! Y estoy contento por eso :)

• Technically, I learned how to make half stitch bands that "touch each other". There is a certain technique to have a a result two bands of the same with. The secret is choosing the right working pair. So, for bands that slant to the left you choose the right pair (from the starting point) as working pair. On the other hand, for right slanting bands, you choose the left pair. This way you will get two bands of the same with.

• Técnicamente hablando, aprendí a hacer bandas a medio punto que van conectadas en un punto. Hay una técnica para obtener bandas del mismo grosor. El secreto está en saber escoger el par que será el par de trabajo. Para una banda que se inclina hacia la izquierda, se debe usar el par de la derecha (respecto al punto de inicio de la banda) como par de trabajo (lanzadera). Mientras que para una banda que se inclina hacia la derecha, se toma el par de la izquierda como lanzadera. Así, ambas bandas quedarán con el mismo grosor.

• I also learned to connect both bands using cloth stitch.

• También aprendí a conectar las dos bandas usando punto entero.

• Finishing the book mark was really exciting! I used cloth stitch to bring all the pairs to the middle and then knot them using the outer pairs to make a flat knot (which is extremely easy!!)

• ¡Rematar el marcapáginas fue una pasada! Lo hice a punto de repaso, trayendo todos los pares hasta el centro de la labor. Luego, usando los pares externos hice un nudo plano (¡que es lo más fácil y bonito del mundo!)

• Mayte gave me such a good advice!! She recommended me not to use pins with a crystal head, instead it is better to use those with a little tiny head so I can see what I am doing! It seems to be something so obvious... but I didn't even think about it until she told me!

• Mayte me dio un consejo buenísimo. Me recomendó dejar de usar los alfileres con cabeza de cristal y empezar a usar los que tienen la cabeza chiquita para poder así ver la labor y evitar errores. Parece ser algo tan obvio, ¡pero a mí ni siquiera se me había ocurrido!

Finally, and to finish this topic, there is one more thing I learned making this project: Since I used a very fine cotton to make something that has to be rather resistant I wanted to try to use starch to make it stiffer. How did I do it?


Finalmente, y para terminar con este tema, hay una cosa más que aprendí con este marcapáginas: Como usé algodón, el resultado no es lo suficientemente fuerte como para ser un buen marcapáginas. Entonces, probé almidonarlo. ¿Cómo lo hice?

To make the starch solution:

Para hacer la solución de almidón:

• 2 cups of cold tab water / 2 tazas de agua fría del caño
• 1 table spoon of Maizena (corn starch) / 1 cucharada sopera de Maizena

Mixed very, very well and put it into a spray bottle. Then I sprayed the book marker (everything but the tail) until it got pretty soaked. The dried it with a very hot iron. It worked wonderfully!!


Mezclar muy, muy, muy bien y poner la solución en un rociador. Lo que hice luego fue rociar el marcapáginas hasta empaparlo (menos la cola). Luego lo sequé con la plancha bien caliente. ¡Funciona de maravillas!

Something terrible happened to it... and it is ALL my fault!


Algo terrible le pasó... y ¡TODO por mi culpa!

I was not very happy with the blocking, I found that the shawl was a bit crooked so I decided to reblock it. This time Gummi was helping me (luckily). We were stretching the scalloped edge (the points) when I suddenly look at Gummi's "HORROR FACE"... when I was stretching one points and putting the pin to hold it one of the threads BROKE! I didn't even notice it... but just by looking at Gummi's face I knew there was something wrong! I managed to make a not to join the broken ends and avoid further damage but the result is far from pretty!!


Todo empezó porque no estaba muy satisfecho con el bloqueo. El chal estaba un poquito torcido por lo que decidí rebloquearlo. Esta vez Gummi me ayudó (por suerte). Estábamos estirando las puntas del borde del chal cuando de pronto veo que Gummi está con una "CARA DE HORROR" terrible... cuando yo estaba estirando una de las puntas y poniendo un alfiler para sujetarla ¡¡¡una de las hebras se ROMPIÓ!!! Yo no me di ni cuenta... pero sólo con verle la cara a Gummi supe que algo malo había pasado. De alguna manera casi milagrosa logré atar los dos cabos para evitar que el daño fuera más grande, pero el resultado es un hoyo y una punta muy fea (y visible). :(

The point that is in the middle looks hideous! I wouldn't have cared much if it would have been on a point close to and end but this point is almost at the apex (or vertex??) of the triangle... a very visible part :(
La punta que está al centro de la foto se ve HORRIBLE. No me hubiera importado tanto si se hubiera roto cerca de la vase el trángulo pero no... tenía que pasar en el lugar más visible del chal... cerca del vértice :(

So, I have decided that I cannot give my friend's wife a shawl that has such an ugly defect. I don't really know what I will do with this shawl :( I guess it will end up somewhere in my closet. 


Al final, he decidido que NO le puedo regalar un chal con un fallo tan feo a la esposa de mi amigo. No sé qué voy a hacer con este chal :( Supongo que terminará durmiendo en el fondo de mi armario.

Now, I have already started a new shawl for her... I decided to use a different yarn this time and also another pattern... No more info at the moment, hehe. 


Ya he empezado a tejer un nuevo chal para ella... pero esta vez estoy usando otro estambre (uno muy chulo que encontré en Reykjavík) y estoy usando otro patrón... eso nada más por ahora, hehe.

Baltic Blossoms and some more / Baltic Blossoms y otras cositas

Baltic Blossoms is a shawl that I have had in my mind for quite a while but never found the chance to knit or well, I really hadn't found the person to knit it for... until now.


El chal Baltic Blossoms lo he tenido en mente desde hace ya un buen rato, pero no había tenido la oportunidad de tejerlo... o más bien no había encontrado la persona para quien tejerlo... hasta ahora. 


The person I had in my mind while I was knitting it is the wife of a dear, dear friend, who I don't even know her in person (yet), but I think that my friend talked so much about her that I already like her so much as to knit a shawl for her! It is one of those strange things that happen sometimes...


La persona en quien pensaba mientras lo tejía es la esposa de un queridísimo amigo. La verdad es que a ella ni siquiera la conozco en persona (aún). Mi amigo me habló tanto de su mujer que siento que casi la conozco... ¡tanto como para decidir tejer un chal! Es una de esas cosas raras que pasan a veces, ¿no?


So, while my friend was still in Iceland he helped me to pick up a color that she would like and I was in charge of the rest: choosing the pattern and making the shawl happen.


Mientras mi amigo estaba en Islandia, me ayudó a escoger un color que, de acuerdo a él, le gustaría a su mujer. Del resto me encargaría yo: escoger el patrón y hacer el chal.

I think it is always interesting to see the MAGIC that blocking makes... it seems impossible that this wrinkled knitted piece can be something beautiful.
Me parece que siempre es interesante ver la MAGIA que ocurre después del bloqueo... parece imposible pensar que un pedazo de lana tejido, todo arrugado pueda convertirse en algo tan bonito.

* Alpaca lace by Cascade is an amazing yarn. It is extremely soft  and it comes it wonderful colors. But I must admit that I had some problems making the nupps. It is SO SOFT that it runs too easily between the fingers and the needle so sometimes the loops of the nupps became a bit too small to purl them easily on the purling row. It was nothing terrible though.


* La Alpaca Lace de Cascade es exquisita. Es una lana extremadamente suave y viene además en unos colores preciosos. Debo admitir que tuve algunos problemillas haciendo los nupps. La lana es TAN SUAVE que se desliza fácilmente entre los dedos y la aguja por lo que a veces las lazadas de los nupps se volvían un poco pequeñas lo que hacía un poco difícil tejerlos por el revés. Ahora, no fue nada tan terrible... sólo fue cosa de ser cuidadoso y tener un poco de paciencia.

* I think I should have used bigger needles. 4mm would have worked well in order to make a slightly bigger shawl. Even though I made 13 repeats of the body section (which are supposed to be 9 for a "normal size" shawl) the final result wasn't as big as I wanted.


* Creo que debí haber usado agujas más grandes, quizás de 4mm habría sido perfecto para haber obtenido un chal un poco más grande. Aunque hice 13 repeticiones del patrón del cuerpo (en el patrón proponen 9 para un chal tamaño "normal" y 13 para grande) el resultado final no fue tan grande como hubiera querido.

* For the edge I didn't make DOUBLE YARN OVER. I made just SINGLE YARN OVERS (and the wholes are actually still pretty big).


* Para el borde decidí NO hacer DOBLE LAZADAS. Hice sólo LAZADAS SIMPLES (una sola) y de todas maneras los agujeros del borde resultaron medio grandes.

* About blocking: It was pretty easy to block, even though I didn't do it as it should be. The scalloped edge is in reality not scalloped. Each point is supposed to be opened so in reality they are not pointy but rounded (it is possible to see pics on Ravelry). I didn't do the points rounded because I had the idea that after a while they would become ugly and floppy. So, I went for a safe pointy edge. 


* Sobre el bloqueo: Es un chal bastante fácil de bloquear, aunque en realidad no lo hice como se propone en el patrón. El borde en realidad no tiene puntas como el mío. Se supone que cada punta hay que bloquearla para obtener una onda (algo así como una punta redondeada, que se puede ver en Ravelry, si te interesa). Preferí hacer puntas porque me dio la impresión de que las ondas se pondrían feas después un tiempo.

* In general, I would say that the pattern is very clear, it is very well written. I highly recommend it... especially for those (like me) who love the Estonian lace tradition.


* En general, me pareció un buen patrón, está muy bien escrito y el resultado es muy bonito. Lo recomiendo, especialmente para quienes (como yo) les encanta la tradición de tejido estonio.

We are so very happy with Dehilos.com!! Over the last two weeks it has been growing and growing! Really cool people is coming and registering and most importantly making Dehilos work!

Mavivi had a wonderful idea... she began a CAL. She proposed a crocheted flower pattern that everybody who decided to participate had to crochet and then show the results to the group. There are lot of beautiful flower on the group's wall now!!


Mavivi tuvo una idea genial... se le ocurrió hacer un GAV (Ganchilleando A la Vez). Propuso un patrón para hacer una flor. Todos los que decidieran apuntarse al GAV tendrían que hacer la misma flor, escogiendo los materiales y colores que desearan, y luego la idea es colgar la foto de la flor terminada. ¡Ya tenemos un montón de flores colgadas!

Well, I want to introduce Sayo to you :) She has just return from Germany where she bought a beginner's set with a beautiful bobbin lace cushion, 10 pairs of bobbins, some threads, pins and even a DVD!


Bueno, les quiero presentar a Sayo :) Acaba de volver de un viaje a Alemania, lugar donde compró un set para principiantes bien bonito. El set consiste en un mundillo, 10 pares de bolillos, hilos, alfileres y hasta un DVD.

So, we didn't waste our time and started right away with the exercises!
