Hyrna Herborgar: One more time / Hyrna Herborgar: Una vez más

When I started to knit almost four years ago I never thought I was going to knit the same pattern more than once or twice thinking that it could get boring.

Well, it has not been the case at all! A few weeks ago I finished my fifth Hyrna Herborgar! Yes! 5th!

¡5to!

There is something about this pattern that makes it very special... I don't know if it is because it is an Icelandic design or because it is simply beautiful or both of them. The thing is that I NEVER get tired of it!

This shawl has already made it all the way to Orcas Island in the U.S. where a good friend lives.

Hyrna Herborgar n°5

Notas:

* I think I have said this several times before, but here it goes again: I have been asked several times if this shawl is too complicated to knit. The answer has always been "no, not at all". I think that is exactly one of the greatest things about this shawl: It looks a lot, A LOT, more complicated than it really is.

* The pattern is very well written but the chart can be a bit complicated to read at first. It seems to be made by hand but you get used to it after a while.

* In the book they suggest to start simply by casting on 7 stitches and begin the pattern. That leaves a little gap at the garter stitch border, nothing terrible but it looks much better without it. To avoid that gap I used the garter stitch tab which makes the garter stitch border look just perfect (the video is a bit long but it is very clear).

Hyrna Herborgar n°5

 * This shawl was born as an emergency project. I had already made a shawl for my friend but I had a little accident with it while I was blocking it (I guess that most of you already know the story of the Baltic Blossoms, hehe). So, I needed to make another one as quickly as possible. The first task was to find the right yarn. I was not going to take the chance and use the Cascade lace alpaca again (and risk breaking the yarn again!). So I went on the search and I found this AMAZING silk in a shop downtown Reykjavík called Storkurinn.  Jaipur silk comes in WONDERFUL SHINY colors!! It is not on the cheapest side but it is worth every króna that I spent on it!

* This is the first Hyrna that I make with silk, and I won't be the last one! Silk is so WONDERFUL! It blocks like heaven, the drape is perfect and the stitch definition is truly beautiful.

* The book Þríhyrnur and langsjöl is really good. There are a few great patterns but the queen of the book is without a doubt Hyrna Herborgar. If you ever have the chance to get this book... don't hesitate and just get it :)

And to finish, I want to mention Martha Donají, a mexican knitter friend I met through Ravelry... a friend of hers, Juan Pablo, is now visiting Iceland and we arranged a meeting so we would go together to Álafoss to get some lopi por Martha... which ended up in a little tour around Reykjavík:

Postcard exchange and some more / Intercambio de postales y algo más

A few weeks ago I was invited by Macarena to take part of a postcard exchange that she was organizing in her blog CariñoMalo. The idea was to send a postcard (or as many as you wanted) that showed the place where you live as a way to bring to life the old nice feeling of getting "real post" on your mail box... which is ALWAYS exciting!

Well, last week I received my envelope!!

¡La semana pasada recibí my sobre!

This envelope was sent by Eugenia, an Argentinian living in Germany who has a WONDEFUL blog devoted to her photography and DIY projects.

Now, what was inside the envelope!
Y ahora ¡el contenido del sobre!
A postcard, of course. Poor Eugenia had it a bit difficult at first when she saw that she was assigned the ONLY guy who was taking part of the exchange!
Three beautiful pictures that she took (my favorite one on top :) Thank you so much for this Eugenia...  It was extremely generous of your art with me.
And cotton thread... the same one I got in Reykjavík to make the bookmarks.
The only thing I have left to say is THANK YOU Eugenia! Your presents really brightened up my day!!

And of course thank you to Macarena for having this wonderful idea!

Continuing talking about presents, about two weeks ago I met my friend Linda Björk at a knitting meeting at our LYS and she had a little bag full of surprises for me!

The bag :)
La bolsa :)

Pins in different sizes, silk (!) thread and linen in many colors!!

This linen threads are especially cool! The colors are awesome!
Estos hilos de lino son especialmente chulos! Me encantan los colores!

Takk kærlega fyrir þetta elsku ýndislega Linda Björk!!

And to finish and stop talking about presents... I have finished a new bookmark using the threads that Kristín Hrund gave a few weeks ago...

There are a couple of mistakes but they are not very evident... so I can live with it, hehe.
Details:

Detalles:

Thread: 100% cotton  (turquoise and light blue)
Hilo: 100% algodón (turquesa y celeste)

N°of bobbins: 40
Nº de bolillos: 40

Stitches: Rose bud, spiders, chevron (made with half stitch)

Notes:

Notas:

* The most challenging part of the whole thing was to make the chevron sections (which are the half stitch diamonds around the spiders) because it is necessary to be very precise in order to get the bands more or less of the same size. The first and second worked really well but there is something a bit weird about the third.

* Overall it was a quick and rather simple bookmark, except for the diamonds that had me thinking for a good while before attempting to make them!

To finish... did you already sign up for the GIVEAWAY!?!?! If not, there is time until August 15th!

A promise is a promise: Shawl give away / Lo prometido es deuda: Sorteo chal

The last two weeks I have been very absent on the blogosphere and the internet in general. I think it is good to take a little break sometimes, especially when you realize that you are spending too much time in front of the computer when there is actually so many things that can be done outside (especially if the weather is good!).

I have been working on a few projects lately (of which I will talk about later) and  I managed to finish one of them... and it is FINALLY flying overseas to meet its owner!!

It was precisely this newly finished project the one that reminded me of The Baltic Blossoms Shawl and the Terrible Accident (well, not so terrible after all, hehe). I had decided that I was going to put this shawl to sleep  in the dark depth of the closet (how dramatic is this?! haha) but there were many of you that showed a lot of interest in it, even though it had this hole where the yarn was teared while I was blocking it.

Baltic Blossoms

So, here it is... I will give it away!

Y bueno... ¡aquí va el sorteo!

Baltic Blossoms
It is made with 100% lace alpaca from Cascade Yarns.

Baltic Blossoms
The shawl is light as a feather, there is a lot of air in it and it is very, very soft.

So, how will this work?!

¿Cómo será esto?

It is will exactly as the other give away:

Será exactamente como el sorteo anterior:

* Leave a comment on this post. If you leave more than one... only one of them will count :)

* After two weeks (that means on Wednesday August 15th) I will take all the comments and assign a number to each of them.

* To choose the winner I will use a random number generator.

Baltic Blossoms
This is what you will get :)
Esto es lo que recibirás :)

And a little reminder of the famous hole...
Un pequeño recordatorio del famoso agujero:
Accidents happen :(
The hole is really not that big and as someone said on a comment it could be a perfect shawl for daily use, mostly as a scarf because it is not very big.

I think that just one present is way too little... I will think about a second prize... so there will be two winners... I will let you know what the second prize will be as soon as I figure it out :)

GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE!!

¡¡¡BUENA SUERTE PARA TOD@S!!!

Half-Birthday Surprise / Sorpresa de cumpleaños y medio

One evening last week I was getting ready to have dinner with a friend when the doorbell rang. We were not expecting anybody so I had no clue about who this could be... To my surprise it was the postman coming with a box for me!!

Now, the story behind the box is very cute. My dear, dear friend Judi wanted to send me a birthday present but, as some of you may know, my birthday is in December... difficult month for most of us, everybody is getting ready for Christmas, students finishing the semester, kids going on winter/summer vacations as so on... so she decided to delay my birthday for May... in the mean time she started to collect some little treasures for me... treasures that I want to share with you today :)

I am going to start with a delicious treasure! She knows how much I love pecans so she sent me lots of them in ways that I had never seen before!! This was a real treat since I started to work out and take more care about my physical condition I almost cut out all candy and chocolate... so this was the perfect excuse to eat some chocolate and sugar! ha! To bad that most of this is already gone by now! hehe.

Since she knows that I am starting to explore the "crochet world" she sent me this interesting book about seamless crochet.

And also Vogueknitting Crochet... how fancy is this?! There are a few very nice models in this one (as well as some horrendous ones, I must say, hehe).

A super cute magazine with traditional knitting and some good stories.

Because of this maganize now I want to try Bosnian Crochet! When you start to believe you have seen it quite a lot there is always something new coming your way!

Inside the big box there was a little white box that contained these three WONDERFUL tatting shuttles and they are not only wonderful because they are beautiful (not like the plastic clover one that have, hehe) but also because they all belonged to her grandmother! I still get goose bumps when I think about it!! And if you see carefully one of the shuttles has still thread on it. I just have no words to describe what I feel about this huge sign of generosity from Judi!!

A set of very colorful crochet hooks (that come in very odd numbers, like 3.25, 3.75, 4.25... number that I would have probably never bought but that make the perfect complement for the ones I already have!! So thoughtful of Judi!!)

One skein of a really nice blend of wool and some tatting thread :)

A super cute sock blocker key ring kit :)

A super tiny cute pair of scissors... puppy scissors! This came at the precise moment! A few weeks ago, during a trip through the south coast of Iceland I lost my scissors so I had been using the huge paper scissors that we have at home... but not anymore!

Darning needles with a really useful case (and the puppy scissors)

Tags (I didn't take a picture of the back of them but there it is possible to write to whom the knitted thing is, materials used and care instructions).

A box (full of candy made with pecans!) (and it is possible to see the needles that Judi sent me a year ago, which also belonged to her grandmother!)

A mug (which is great, because I couple of months ago I had a little accident in the kitchen while I was trying to arrange the mugs in the cabinet after I washed them and I managed to break five, YES, FIVE of them!!)

This one really made me smile... a little geography lesson :)

A puffin!

¡Un frailecillo!
A (late) birthday card, postcards and a pen.

And finally... Judi made this for me!! Yes! She took the time to sew a blanket for me. It is so perfectly well done! And the colors are so all so earthy... it even scares me to see how much she seems to know me! hehe. The blanket is pretty big, in the picture it is folded in half... it was the only way I found to take a good picture of it being alone. Isn't it beautiful?!

Y finalmente...
The blanket a little closer.

Un poquita más cerca.
And of course the blanket didn't come alone.. Judi also made a really cool photo album with all the process of making the blanket!! I thought this was simply fantastic!!

All I can say is THANK YOU SO MUCH Judi!

This has been the most AMAZING "birthday and a half" that I have ever had! :)

And now that I am talking about the mail... A couple of weeks ago I was invited to take part on a postcards exchange that was organized by CariñoMalo. So, everybody who was interested left a message on the post and then Macarena matched the couples...

My envelope left last Monday... it is traveling a looong way so hopefully it should arrive sometime around the beginning of next week.

To finish.. a picture of a super cute Icelandic lamb!!
